What this BibTeX checker checks
The local check looks for missing fields, unusual years, repeated citation keys, duplicate DOIs, and matching titles. A repeated DOI can indicate two entries for the same work, while a matching title may be a preprint, a later publication, or another edition. These are review prompts. The checker does not delete entries or rename keys.
Source lookup retrieves records from Crossref, DataCite, PubMed, or Open Library. A retrieved DOI proves that an identifier record was found; it does not prove that your title, authors, or year are correct. Confirm the work, open its source record, and accept differences one field at a time. When the title is substantially different, check whether the DOI belongs to another publication.
Check citations in LaTeX and Markdown
Upload the relevant .tex or Pandoc .md files alongside your bibliography. Common LaTeX citation commands, optional arguments, multiple keys, and Pandoc citations are checked against the keys in your .bib file. A missing key includes its filename and line number so you can fix it in your editor. Entries not used in the uploaded files are listed separately and kept in the bibliography.
Only uploaded files are checked. Custom TeX macros, conditional compilation, missing included files, and unsupported citation commands can make coverage partial. This tool does not compile your paper. Ordinary author–year text, Word citation fields, PDF manuscripts, and scanned references are outside this checker’s scope.
Export repairs without rebuilding your bibliography
The repaired file applies your accepted edits to the original source text. It preserves citation keys, entry order, comments, string definitions, capitalization braces, and fields you did not change. If you accept nothing, the downloaded bibliography keeps the original file contents. Unreadable syntax and duplicate key conflicts need correction before repair export is available.
Download the changes CSV to see old and accepted values, and the unresolved CSV for remaining notices and checks that were not run. Save review.json to continue on another device; that file includes your source files and accepted edits. After exporting, replace the bibliography in a copy of your original project and generate your references again. Check the result against your publisher’s instructions.
Private files, explicit lookups, clear limits
BibTeX parsing, manuscript scanning, editing, and exports run in your browser. Your current review is saved in local browser storage when available. When you choose source lookup, only an identifier or limited title and author fields are sent through NeatCite to public metadata providers. The manuscript, abstracts, private notes, and full bibliography are not uploaded. Clear the review to remove its saved copy on this device.
There is no large language model, subscription, or paid export. Network failures and missing database records remain unknown. The checker does not determine whether a paper supports your argument, check retraction status, or certify that a manuscript is ready for publication.
