Terms of Service
Terms for using NeatCite’s free citation generator, metadata lookup, and export features.
Last updated: 2026-08-21
Acceptance
By using NeatCite, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
Service
NeatCite provides a free citation generator, source-metadata lookup, citation-style guides, and export tools. The public tool does not require an account or paid subscription. Features may change, become unavailable, or be discontinued.
Citation accuracy
NeatCite applies bundled Citation Style Language rules to the metadata available for a source. Metadata returned by third-party services can be incomplete or incorrect, and instructors, departments, journals, and publishers may require local variations. You are responsible for checking source details and final citations against the original source and the requirements that apply to your work.
NeatCite is an editing aid, not a substitute for academic judgment, legal advice, or a publisher's current author instructions.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Break applicable laws or infringe another party's rights.
- Attempt to bypass security controls or gain unauthorized access.
- Disrupt the service or impose unreasonable automated load.
- Use the service to distribute malware, spam, or harmful material.
- Misrepresent generated citations as proof that a source supports a claim.
Third-party services and open-source components
Source lookups may use Crossref, NCBI PubMed, Open Library, and public websites. Those services have their own terms and availability. Citation formatting uses open-source components and CSL files whose notices and licenses remain with their respective authors.
Intellectual property
NeatCite's original interface, copy, and branding are protected by applicable law. You retain responsibility for and rights in source information you enter, subject to the rights of the source's authors and publishers. You may use and export citations generated for your own lawful purposes.
Availability and warranties
The service is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis to the extent permitted by law. We do not guarantee uninterrupted operation, complete metadata, or acceptance of a citation by any institution or publisher.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, NeatCite is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from use of or inability to use the service.
Changes
We may update these terms as the service changes. The date at the top identifies the current version. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised terms.
