Privacy Policy

What NeatCite stores in your browser, what is sent during source lookup, and how to contact us about privacy.

Last updated: 2026-09-02

Summary

The public NeatCite citation generator works without an account. Your citation list is stored in your browser's local storage so it can remain available on that device. NeatCite does not sell personal information.

Citation data and identifier lookups

When you enter source details manually, the citation list is formatted in your browser. When you request an identifier lookup, the DOI, PubMed ID, ISBN, URL, or other lookup value is sent to NeatCite's server and then to the relevant public metadata provider:

  • Crossref for DOI metadata.
  • NCBI PubMed for PubMed records.
  • Open Library for ISBN metadata.
  • The public page itself when a URL lookup is requested.

Those providers process requests under their own privacy policies. Review the returned authors, title, date, and publication details before using them.

Pasted reference lists

When you use the citation checker, the references you submit are sent to NeatCite's server for source matching. An entry containing a DOI, PubMed ID, ISBN, or URL is sent to the relevant provider listed above. Identifier-free text may be sent to Crossref's bibliographic search so the checker can look for a strong title, author, and year match.

The checker does not add the pasted list to neatcite.sources.v1, and NeatCite does not intentionally create an account record or citation-history record from that text. Routine hosting and security systems may still process request data as described below. Do not paste confidential, embargoed, personally identifying, or otherwise sensitive text into the checker.

Local browser storage

NeatCite stores your current citation list in localStorage under the key neatcite.sources.v1. This data remains on your device until you remove the sources, clear site data, or clear browser storage. Exported files are saved wherever your browser sends downloads.

Technical and analytics data

Our hosting provider may process routine request data such as IP address, requested URL, timestamp, browser user agent, and security signals to deliver and protect the site. If traffic analytics are enabled, they may record page views, referrers, approximate device information, and aggregate location data. Citation-list contents are not intentionally included in analytics events.

We may use cookies or browser storage for essential settings such as theme preference. The citation generator does not require advertising or payment cookies.

Email

If you email us, we receive the address and information you choose to send. We use it to respond, investigate reported problems, and maintain necessary support records.

Sharing and retention

We do not sell personal information. Data may be processed by infrastructure, analytics, email, and source-metadata providers only as needed to operate the site, or disclosed when required by law or necessary to protect the service and its users. Retention periods vary by provider; local citation data is controlled through your browser.

Your choices

You can remove locally stored citation data by clearing sources in NeatCite or clearing site data for neatcite.com in your browser. You can also block optional analytics with browser privacy controls or content-blocking tools.

Changes

We may update this policy when the product or its providers change. The date at the top identifies the current version.
